Making Tails Wag Better
By Deb D’Andrea
Have you ever wondered what your dog does while you’re away? Do they just sleep, do they figure out creative ways to spread your trash throughout the house, do they decide the stuffing in the comforter needs to be set free or TP the house, as my Tiki girl once did while I was there!
She decided the best thing ever was to grab one end of the toilet paper and run and run and run through the house, barely wrapping it around furniture and the stair case just enough that it smoothly kept going and didn’t rip! I have to say, I laughed at the sight and she was very proud of herself, only stopping once the entire role was empty.
What dogs do during the day varies significantly, from some just sleeping and relaxing, enjoying their alone time; to others who experience separation anxiety due to hours of isolation. One family used to find their patio furniture and yard completely soaked, only to discover after placing a camera in the yard that their dogs were using the pool while their people were away – the dogs loved to swim and slide down the slide!
As you know your dog, you have an idea what’s going to happen in your absence and doing what you can to help your dog is best. One of my clients always places the trash in their bathroom and shuts the door as their dog loves to get into the trash. If you’re away for long periods of time, it’s good to hire a neighbor or dog walker to come let your pup out, give them human interaction and playtime, and help your dog channel their energy when you’re away. For my clients, if they’re dog friendly, Tiki and Bear always join in the fun for a roving puppy play date!
I recommend leaving on classical music or a movie channel for your dog so they have something to listen to or watch. It’s amazing how this will calm them and help them throughout the day versus sitting in an empty, quiet house all day, listening to every noise and creak. My girls watch TV, especially if there are dogs, cats or horses on the screen, but I never leave on Animal Planet for anyone as they have a variety of shows with animals in distress or having surgery. I also don’t leave on channels that have reality shows or daytime soaps as some of those have people yelling and screaming at each other which isn’t very soothing to a pup!
