Top-notch art in Central City

2019 Gilpin Arts Members Show

By David Josselyn

Tucked away in the upper room of the oldest, continuously used public building in Colorado, usually referred to as Washington Hall, is a spectacular art gallery produced by the Gilpin County Arts Association and lovingly managed by Michele Roussel. Inside you will find masterpieces painstakingly created by local artists displayed in each unique room of the gallery creating a cultural experience like none other in the county. Member’s of Gilpin Arts Association can display and sell their work each year during the Annual Members’ Show that follows the annual juried show. Manager Roussel describes this year’s show as “colorful” and Assistant Manager Aileen says she “just loves this! It’s so much fun and there is so much diversity. It inspires you to do more work (art) and it’s good for your spirit!”

Indeed, the pieces hanging in the gallery are impressive, professional, and would be great additions to the homes and collections of Gilpinites and visitors. The quality of work continues to astound and be comparable to works in galleries in the Denver Art District and famously known art districts in New York City and beyond. Past-President Harv Mastillir calls Washington Hall the “best kept secret in Gilpin County” and while the fact of the statement may be in question, the intent is still correct; Washington Hall’s art gallery is not well known. Nevertheless, Michele Roussel is excited for the future; “We have a lot of new members!” She said they upgraded to a new system for the juried show called Café which is a call for entry site that generates the event and processes entries. The application has broadened the knowledge of Washington Hall and piqued the interest of artists that are hearing about it for the first time. The Annual Members’ Show will run through September 20th – come check it out!
