Phillip Anton Matson, 87, of Mount Prospect, Illinois, died April 19, 2015 at 6:55 p.m. at Northwest Community Hospital, from complications of a stroke suffered April 9, 2014.23
Phillip was born July 10, 1927 in Black Hawk, Colorado, the son of Anton Matson and Elizabeth Louise Thompson. He was educated in Black Hawk, served his country in Korea, and was honorable discharged in 1946.
He married Mildred (Midge) Woodby, October 2, 1948 in Idaho Springs, Colorado. In 1949 they moved to Chicago where they shared 56 years of marriage as members of the Wicker Park Lutheran and Concordia Lutheran Church. Phil was a welder by trade and retired from the Chicago Police Department, July 10, 1992. Phil enjoyed Boy Scouts, pool, miniature golf, and was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; step-father, and wife Midge. He is survived by three sons; Mark P. Matson (Sarah) of Dublin Ireland, Paul W. Matson, and Phillip A. Matson Jr. of Chicago, IL; two grandchildren – Niall and Rosie of Dublin, Ireland; brother Linold N. Begg and sister Catherine V. Monahan (Pat), of Central City, CO; brother Danny A. Begg of Wichita, KS; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Memorial Service will be conducted by Rev. Nicholas J. Zook, May 2, 2015 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 3855 N. Seeley Ave, Chicago Illinois. Cremains, Private with Family Members. Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project.
