National Western Stock Show volunteer program

How to become a volunteer

By Kellie Lombardi, Director of Volunteer Services

We have 800 volunteers which include 100 local royalty from county rodeos throughout Colorado, Wyoming and some from Nebraska. NWSS volunteers contributed almost 34,000 hours last year. Most of the hours are done during the month of January; however we use volunteers year round from All Star Rodeo which is scheduled for April 12-13 this year and for The Denver County Fair (a very urban county fair), schedule July 19-21, 2019. Volunteers also assist at some of the Complex Shows held on our facility throughout the year especially horse shows. Some just completed volunteering for the Dog Show that was held on our complex of Presidents Weekend.

Volunteers purchase their own volunteer uniform and each is required to provide at least 30 minimum hours per year to the organization. In return, we provide free admission throughout the show, each receives two show tickets to selected rodeos, horse shows, a parking pass, discount on food, a kick-off lunch and an appreciation dinner after the show is over. We provide awards at the appreciation dinner for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 year volunteers. Each gets a special bar indicating their volunteer year to hang on their name tags along with a special admission badge. 30 year volunteers get to ride on the hitch in the rodeo, 25 year volunteer volunteers get a framed picture of our featured artist each year, and 20 year volunteers get a clock.

Volunteers assist our staff in many ways – and many indicate they like our program because volunteers can assist in as many areas as they are interested. They are not stuck in one area, although we have some that do choose to assist in just one service area. Volunteers assist with our art room, several educational locations (activity pavilion, school visits, pony trails), ticket taking, information booths, incident reporting, photo and video support, international room, sponsor room, cowboy hospitality, volunteer center, cattle/horse barns, and VIP driving.

Volunteers must be ages 16 and over. We do have some three-generation families volunteering which is great too! Many of our volunteers have memories of coming here with their parents as kids, while others are animal or art lovers, but all have a love for our western heritage.

We hold 5-6 volunteer one hour orientations for applicants per year. One should provide an application by November so they can be included in all the correspondence. Our first one for the 2019 year is on Thursday, March 7th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. All applicants will receive more information including location, parking, etc. when they fill out one of our online applications at

The main thing people don’t realize about The National Western Stock Show is we are a 501 c 3, Non-Profit organization. We provide over 100 scholarships worth $500,000 each year to various schools. One of those includes a medical school scholarship to those who will practice in a rural area.
