Big wins against KIPP Denver Collegiate and Rocky Mountain Lutheran

Double Header with KIPP

The Clear Creek/Gilpin Golddiggers slammed KIPP Denver Collegiate in 3A double header action Saturday April 13 at Clear Creek High School in Evergreen. The team is now 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.

In the first of the two games, the Golddiggers won 24-4 in only three innings of league play. A small but loyal group of CC/Gilpin fans turned out to cheer on their boys on that breezy, partly sunny morning.

Although KIPP scored first with three quick runs in the first inning, the Golddiggers answered the challenge with a decisive 13 runs, followed by seven in the second inning and four in the third before KIPP hollered “uncle.”

Scoring leader for the Golddiggers was Richard Allen with four runs. Ty Schmalz, Chris Clemmer, Trevor Dziedzic, Dalton Dziedzic, and Zak Ball each had three runs. Justin Bennetts homered once. The team garnered three doubles and three triples.

Ty Schmalz was the leading hitter with five, followed by Justin Bennetts with four and Trevor Dziedzic with three. Team RBI was 18.

Trevor Dziedzic was the winning pitcher for CC/Gilpin. The team also had eight walks and only one strikeout.

The score for the second game was equally one-sided, with the Golddiggers winning this non-conference game 20-7. This time, the teams went six innings, but it was never close.

The Golddiggers’ starting pitcher was Noah Mazurek. Since his team never lost its lead, he was also credited with the win. Justin Bennetts, Eric Castillo, and Dalton Dziedzic also pitched.

A trio of runners for CC/Gilpin scored four runs each: Justin Bennetts, Kenny Larson, and Dalton Dziedzic. Trevor Dziedzic and Zak Ball each scored three runs, and Noah Mazurek came in with two.

Noah Mazurek and Dalton Dziedzic were top sluggers with four hits each; Justin Bennetts and Zak Ball slammed three apiece.

The Golddiggers batted 11 runs in and claimed one double and six triples. They took five walks and reached their base twice on fielders’ errors. Morgan Foelsch was unlucky enough to be hit twice by pitches.

Head coach Shane Ball summarized his team’s success: “The kids were swinging the bat a lot more today, and they were definitely into the game. That really helped out.”

No statistics were available for KIPP.

Outing at Rocky Mountain Lutheran

The Golddiggers triumphed over opponent Rocky Mountain Lutheran (RML) 11-1 on April 11 in a non-league away game.

CC/Gilpin set the tone with four runs in the first inning. RML scored their only run in that inning, also.

Ty Schmalz was the winning pitcher for the Golddiggers; Kenny Larson also pitched. Chris Clemmer excited the fans with a home run. In general, runs and hits were distributed fairly evenly among the team members.

The Golddiggers matched five walks with five strikeouts and reached base twice on fielders’ error.

RML posted no statistics.
