Defeats Community Christian Crusaders 42-19

by Patty Unruh

The Gilpin County Eagles girls’ basketball team triumphed in their home playoff game against Community Christian February 23. The Eagles now possess a 15-5 record. The win was nothing flashy; just good, solid playing by all team members. The Crusaders were unable to do anything against the Lady Eagles.

Samantha Peterson netted 15 points to lead the Eagles, followed by Katura Sales with nine. Ashlen Cortez put six points on the board. Khristine Barr and Hannah Randall each got three points, and Alyssa Chareunsouk, Maria Garcia, and Delainey Lepro each put in two. The Eagles finished with a field goal percentage of 30 percent.

Two-point field goals were earned by Peterson with four and Sales with three; Barr, Chareunsouk, and Lepro with one each. Cortez sank two three-point field goals from way downtown, and Randall and Peterson each netted one.

Peterson put more points on the board with four free throws, with Sales adding three, Garcia two, and Barr one.

The Eagles grabbed nine offensive rebounds and 17 defensive, for a total of 26. Sales had four blocks, and Peterson had four steals and five assists.

Taylor Breen was high scorer for the Crusaders with seven points, followed by Alex Quimby with six. Their team managed to make 23 percent of their field goals. They also got 35 rebounds and six steals.

Next in the series of tournament games was the match with Belleview Christian on February 26.
