Gilpin hoopsters escape North Park Rally

Boys’ Basketball Team Wins 41-29

By George Snyder

In a rugged and ragged game, the Gilpin boys’ basketball team thwarted a North Park rally and salvaged a 41-29 win at the Gilpin gym last Thursday. The third quarter had the local fans biting their fingernails and sliding forward in their seats, as North Park rallied from an 18-11 halftime deficit to tie the game at  22-all. The Wildcats actually took a 25-24 lead with two minutes left in the quarter, but the Eagles rallied with six unanswered points to take a 30-25 lead into the final period. Gilpin finally got its press going and the Eagles coasted to a rather easy win. The win boosted the Eagles’ record to 4-3 for December

Foul trouble again plagued the Eagles as starters Gerardo Correa and Nick Peterson both fouled out. Peterson was particularly significant as he had 9 of Gilpin’s 44 rebounds that controlled the boards during the game. The Eagles also controlled the ball most of the time and had only 4 turnovers compared to North Park’s 25.

Chase Boulter and Matt Immordino once again led the scorers with 16 and 15 points respectively. Boulter, particularly, had an outstanding game as he led the team in rebounds with 17, in assists with 4,  in steals with 5, and in blocked shots with 5.

The Eagles will now enjoy a holiday week before returning to practice. Their next game will be at home vs. South Park (Fairplay) at 4:30 p.m. on January 10 and then begin league play on January 12 against Denver Jewish Day School at the Tigers’ gym. Meanwhile, enjoy a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
