Gilpin County Schools recognized as one of best in Colorado

2017 CDE accreditation ratings

PRESS RELEASE – The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has released the 2017 school and district accreditation ratings. Gilpin County Elementary School received a Performance accreditation rating. Gilpin County Secondary School earned a Performance rating. The Gilpin County School District was awarded Accreditation with Distinction.

A Performance accreditation is the highest rating a school can be awarded. Accreditation with Distinction is the highest rating a district can earn.

The CDE uses state assessment student academic achievement and growth measures to determine annual individual school and district accreditation ratings. Schools earn one of four accreditation ratings: Performance, Improvement, Priority Improvement, and Turnaround. District accreditation ratings are Accreditation with Distinction, Accredited, Improvement, Priority Improvement, and Turnaround.

Teachers and students have been focused on the District’s Instructional Initiatives to improve instruction. The first initiative required teachers to deliver an aligned curriculum to students that focused on what students were to know and be able to do at the end of each grade. Initiative Two required teachers to instruct using research-based strategies to engage students in the learning and incorporate technology as an instructional tool. The third initiative put a system of internal assessment into place to allow teachers to frequently progress-monitor student achievement for the purpose of data-driven instruction to individualize instruction for student learning remediation or enrichment as needed.

The elementary school earned a Performance accreditation rating in 2016 after years of poor performance on state assessments. The secondary school has maintained a Performance rating over many years. The strategic plan goal to have the District recognized as one of the best districts in the state was realized with the Accreditation with Distinction rating for 2017.

“All school staff have come together to work toward achieving a focus on students. The principals, teachers, and students have collectively worked together to improve instruction and student achievement and academic growth. It has been a team effort founded in the strategic plan. The elementary school, the secondary school, and the District are recognized as one of the best schools and District in the State of Colorado,” commented Superintendent David MacKenzie.
