As a computer center for residents to cope with unemployment

By Michael Carlson

The Gilpin County Board of Public Health has approved the library’s plan to use its facility as a computer center. Over the recent weeks there has been a growing need in the community for computer access to check email, search for jobs, and apply for unemployment benefits. While the Safer-At-Home order does not allow the library to resume normal services at this time, the Board of Health can make exceptions for services that provide a critical need or serve persons who are economically disadvantaged.

The library currently has five computers for reservation in our meeting room. Patrons can contact us at 303-582-5777 Monday – Friday from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm to reserve a one-hour session on the computers. Reservations are limited to one hour per day and up to three sessions a week. Reservation times start at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, or 1:00 pm. Residents must have a library card or be willing to sign up for a card to reserve a computer.

In addition to adding computer service, the library is currently providing Pick-Up Service Monday – Friday from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm for those patrons needing something to read or watch. To request items, patrons can visit our online catalog https://gilpin.catalog.aspencat.info and place holds, email us at gilpinlib@gilpincounty.org , or call us at 303-569-9951 during our limited service hours to place orders. During the short time that we have offered this service, there have been 114 patron visits and over 800 items checked out.

The current Safer-At-Home order that stipulates libraries statewide must remain closed is set for review on June 1st. The library has already been working to put safeguards in place to disinfect materials, public computers, and common spaces. Due to economic conditions, the library will not be able to resume normal services this year. We are hoping that when public libraries are allowed to open we can let patrons back into the building to checkout materials during a limited number of hours per week.
