The Gilpin County High School Eagles are scheduled to play their first football game of the season Friday, October 9th at 6:00 pm on the Eagle’s home field against the Sargent Farmers of Monte Vista, Colorado. The school year began with the fall football season cancelled by the Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) due to the coronavirus pandemic. The cancellation was conditionally rescinded, based on a number of safety related restrictions in mid-September, and teams were given a choice of playing a fall season or a spring season.
Gilpin along with 85% of Colorado’s 8-man football teams opted to play the fall season. Practices were not allowed to begin until Thursday, September the 24th, giving the Eagles little time in which to prepare for their first game. The regular season has been compressed to six games including one non-league game and five league games.
The Eagle’s head coach, Craig Ball, is optimistic about the season with four returning experienced Seniors and a number of promising under classmen. The returning Seniors include last season’s League number one receiver, number two in scoring and touchdowns, number three in passing and number three in total yards in the league. We look forward to another exciting season of Gilpin football. Go Eagles!
