PRESS RELEASE – On Saturday, August 18, 2018, 33 year old Michael Schmidt, a possibly armed and dangerous escapee from the Department of Corrections, was arrested without incident at a family cabin located at 138 Midway Dr. in the Mountain Meadows subdivision in mid-Gilpin County.
On August 10, 2018, the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office received information that an escapee may be in Gilpin County hiding at a family cabin. The sheriff’s office initiated surveillance on the cabin which continued for several days. On the morning of August 18, a Gilpin deputy notified the dispatch office that there was a vehicle parked at the cabin and the door appeared to be open with someone in the residence. As the deputy approached the cabin, the door closed.
The deputy requested back-up and when other deputies arrived, the perimeter was secured. The Jefferson County Tactical Team was requested to respond and arrived on scene very quickly. When Mr. Schmidt saw that the residence was surrounded, he voluntarily exited the residence and was taken into custody. A pregnant female also exited with Schmidt and was arrested on a felony warrant. The female was transported to the hospital due to her medical condition where the Denver Sheriff’s Office took custody of her. Michael Schmidt was transported to the Gilpin County Jail.
The safety of our citizens is always paramount in any situation and the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office and the Jefferson County Tactical Team did an outstanding job of containing a dangerous situation.
