Double Loss to Community Christian
The Gilpin County Eagles baseball team suffered losses in two away conference games against the Community Christian Bulldogs (CC) of Westminster on April 11. The team is now 3-4 overall and 2-4 for away games.
The first game was a tight contest, as Gilpin lost by a score of only 17-15. The Bulldogs scored a run in the first inning and another in the second. The third inning saw both teams scoreless, and the Eagles were kept from gaining points until the fourth inning, when they managed 3 runs. That excitement was dimmed somewhat by CC’s 10 runs in the third. Gilpin answered with 8 runs in the fourth period and its final run in the seventh. CC managed 3 more runs in the sixth inning.
Highlights included 3 scores each by leading runners Jon Lovett and Dalton Dziedzic.
Leading hitter was Dziedzic with 3, followed by Eryk Lorenz and Eric Castillo, each with 2 hits.
Castillo was also tops in RBI’s with 4; teammate Chase Boulter had 3 runs batted in.
Castillo gave the crowd something to cheer about with a home run, and the Eagles also had three doubles and two triples.
Gilpin players had 12 strikeouts and 5 walks.
In fielding, Boulter had an impressive 9 put-outs, followed by Sam Snyder with 6. Dziedzic had 4 assists.
Castillo was the starting pitcher, and Lorenz also pitched; the duo had 11 hits against, 16 runs against, 3 earned runs, walked 6 batters, and made 9 strikeouts.
Second Game with Bulldogs
The Eagles were unable to improve their record in the second match with Community Christian, coming in with a 13-7 loss. CC began with 5 runs in the first inning to Gilpin’s 1. Gilpin’s other runs came in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Top plays were made as follows:
Lorenz and Boulter led the team with 2 runs each, while Dziedzic slugged 2 hits. Castillo, Dziedzic, and Snyder made a trio with 2 RBI’s each.
Dziedzic had 1 triple and Castillo 1 double.
Gilpin’s ball players were walked 5 times and suffered 10 strikeouts.
Fielding saw Lorenz with 8 put-outs and Dziedzic with 3, while Boulter had 2 assists.
Boulter was the starting pitcher. Dziedzic also pitched. The Eagles pitchers had 11 hits against, 13 runs against, 7 earned runs, 3 walks, and 8 strikeouts.
Loss to Dawson School
The Eagles were handed an 18-9 loss on April 7 to the Dawson School Mustangs of Lafayette in away non-conference play.
Gilpin was holding its own fairly well, with the score 4-4 until the fourth inning, when Dawson exploded with 10 runs, followed by 4 more in the seventh inning. The Eagles scored an additional 5 runs, but they needed much more.
Boulter led Gilpin in runs with 4, followed by Dziedzic’s contribution of 3 runs. Hits were spread evenly among team members.
Castillo had 3 RBI’s and 1 sacrifice fly.
In fielding, Castillo led in put-outs with 8; Lovett had 4. Dziedzic had 4 assists and Bjorn Tomlinson 3.
Lorenz was the starting pitcher and Boulter also pitched. The pair had 19 hits against, 18 runs against, and 9 earned runs.
Gilpin’s high school runners competed in the Weld Central 7th Annual Rebel Round-Up at Keenesberg on Friday, April 10. The Eagles did not place, but here are their events and times.
