Gilpin girls lose to Jim Elliot Christian in overtime

Eagles Boys v. Lions

The Gilpin Eagles boys’ varsity flew by the Lyons Lions 43-33 in a league battle on Tuesday, January 10, on the Lions’ court. Gilpin and their hosts were neck-and-neck during the first three quarters of this exciting matchup, standing at 22-22 going into the final period. Eagles fans had a lot to scream about as their team poured it on in the fourth quarter with 21 points to win.

Gilpin’s boys now have a 2-6 overall record, 1-1 in league play, and can be proud of defeating their opponents, who have a better overall record of 4-6 but no league wins.

Matthew Immordino was Gilpin’s scoring leader with 26 points, including 2 three-pointers and 4 free throws; Joe McCain came in with 9 to lead the Lions. Austin Boulter topped Gilpin’s rebounding chart with 7 offensive and 4 offensive rebounds, and Nick Peterson followed with 6 offensive and 5 defensive. Immordino managed 2 blocks; Boulter and Chris Burtschi came in with 1 each to help lead to the victory.

Gilpin Girls v. JEC

The Lady Eagles’ varsity suffered a blow as they went down 44-38 in overtime to the Jim Elliot Christian Warriors of Englewood (JEC) last Thursday the 12th. The away non-conference game brings the Gilpin girls to a 4-5 overall record, 1-1 in league play. JEC now has an 8-3 overall tally, 2-0 for league action.

The Lady Eagles maintained a good 14-7 lead over their rivals in the first half. Then the Warriors decided it was time to go to work and scored 27 points to Gilpin’s 20 in the second half to tie the game 34-34. JEC maintained their pace during the overtime period to outscore the Eagles 10-4, to make the final score 44-38 Warriors.

Cicely Lepro was selected Gilpin’s Player of the Game, scoring 3 two-pointers and grabbing 1 offensive and 6 defensive rebounds and making 1 deflection play. Other team leaders were Jessica Wilhelm with 10 points, 8 total rebounds, 1 block, and 5 deflections; and Berkley Davis with 9 points, including 1 three-point field goal, 5 rebounds and 6 deflections. Annabel Diekman and Keely Schmidt each put 5 points on the board.

Lady Eagles v. Lions

The Gilpin varsity girls were soundly defeated by the Lyons Lions on January 10, coming away with a 45-23 loss in that away league contest. The Lions maintain a strong 10-1 season record, 3-0 for league games.

The Player of the Game for the Lady Eagles was #15, senior Annabel Diekman, who scored 7 points, including 2 three-pointers and 1 free throw, nabbed 3 defensive rebounds, and contributed 2 assists and 1 steal to her team’s effort. Cicely Lepro and Jessica Wilhelm also performed well, scoring 7 points and 6 points, respectively. Those players were also first in defensive rebounds for Gilpin, with 4 each. Berkley Davis helped with 3 assists. The Lady Eagles had 4 steals.

Ixcel Leeuwenburgh was Lyons’ scoring leader with 16. The Lions shocked the Eagles with 31 steals and 7 blocks. Gilpin was hampered by 34 turnovers to Lyons’ 15, and 12 personal fouls to Lyons’ 8.

The Gilpin teams meet Dawson and Heritage Christian in away games this week.
