Dancing to their hearts’ content

Fathers and daughters enjoy a special night out

by Lisa L. Lopez

This years’ Father-Daughter Valentine’s Ball saw unicorns floating from the ceiling and balloons sprouting from tables adorned with colorful tablecloths and sweet Valentine treats. The Gilpin County Recreation Center hosted the annual event on Saturday, February 8, from 6-8 p.m. The evening started out on the right foot including a menu sure to please partygoers of all ages. Who doesn’t like pizza, caramel corn, cupcakes, and lemonade? Not this group!

There was an eclectic mix of Contemporary Pop music ranging from Katy Perry’s ‘Eye of the Tiger’ to ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. Lots of smiles and laughter came from the young ladies and dads while they tore up the dance floor. Some of the fathers took a little bit of nudging from the girls before getting up the courage to show off their dance moves. Not surprisingly, these little gals were just as thrilled to dance with each other for the first few tunes while entertaining the group of onlooking dads. Soon, all attendees were rocking to the music and doing the ‘Macarena’!

The Valentine’s Ball has been held for several years now, and for many there on Saturday, it was not their first time attending. The daughters got to dress up in their best, spend some quality time with their dads, and whoop it up with friends. There was also a rainbow arch made of balloons for guests to get a photo taken to mark the special night.

Dancing was interrupted at one point to include all in a game of ‘Keep it Up’ by volleying a balloon back and forth between the pairs without letting it touch the floor. These teams were bending over backwards to keep those balloons in the air!

Thanks to the Gilpin Rec Center for hosting this Ball year after year. It’s events like these that help bring small communities together. This is just one of many activities put on by the Rec Center that take place throughout the year. There is always something going on for those of all ages.
