First Virtual Community Workshop scheduled for May 5th

By Stephen Strohminger

Gilpin County announced on Tuesday this week the first in a series of community workshops and surveys for the County’s first ever Comprehensive Plan. The initial community survey is available now to help develop a vision for Gilpin County’s future. In an effort to maximize public health and safety during COVID-19, the workshop will be presented virtually:

Upon completion, the Gilpin County Comprehensive Plan will replace the County’s existing Master Plan. Originally adopted in 1987, the current Master Plan has been updated three times over the past 30 years – in 1992, 2008, and minor changes in 2017.

“As Gilpin County continues to prioritize the evolving needs of our residents, visitors and government, the County will be well served by a Comprehensive Plan that reflects our community values,” said Gilpin County Manager Abel Montoya. “This planning process will provide predictable policies to advance the additional areas of focus identified in the County’s 2019 Strategic Plan, such as workforce engagement, financial sustainability and quality of life.”

Long-range planning

The project is anticipated to be conducted over the next 12-months or more and cover critical long-range planning topics, such as land use and zoning, transportation, and capital improvements. Additional topics contingent upon funding from pending grant applications may be added during the process, such as hazard mitigation, historic preservation and open space, parks and trails.

Community engagement will be a critical part of the planning process.

In addition to the May 5th workshop and the first of three community surveys, multiple additional meetings and other opportunities for engagement will be available throughout the effort.  This comprehensive planning effort is made possible by a grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.
