For Gilpin RE-1 School Board

Hello, my name is Joe Marr and I’m running for a position on the Gilpin County RE-1 School Board. The election is this November 5th. I Have my wonderful wife Mary, four adult children, and 17 (and #18 due this fall) grandchildren. I have owned and run a successful remodeling and construction business here for 15 years. Some of you know me, but some of you don’t. For those of you that do know me you know I tend to get to the point quickly so I’ll try not to take up a lot of newspaper space here.

It is my opinion that our School District is in the best place academically and financially it has ever been. In the 22+ years we’ve lived in Gilpin County, our district has improved considerably. I want to do my part to make sure our district continues to be the positive organization that it has become and with proper leadership will be in the future.

All four of our children graduated from Gilpin School. Even before it was as great as it is now, because of its size, staff, and people who care, this place offered our kids opportunities and experiences they wouldn’t have been able to experience anywhere else. We are still grateful for that. This is a special school that I deeply care for.

Twenty years ago I was a member of the District Accountability Committee and was asked by some parents to run for a seat on the School Board. At first I said no, but I am glad I did. I ran unopposed that time. During those four years the district accomplished some very good things. Among all of the budgeting, leading, building a new building, dealing with personnel and all of the things involved in educating young people during that term, it all came down to a single thought for me. In fact I presented the district a plaque when I finished my term. It reads, “Always remember to ask yourselves, What’s Best for Kids.” In fact, that plaque still hangs in the Board Room today. I thank all of the Board Members throughout the years for keeping that little plaque, and more importantly, that thought in the school.

The bottom line is that I am an honest, responsible, conscientious person that believes in doing what’s best for kids. I would be honored to serve another term on our School Board to keep the District on a positive trajectory. I will be there for the Candidate Forum on September 30th in the School Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. I hope to see you there as well. Please come and find out what your four candidates are all about and vote for the strongest three at election time.
