Bring your pet to work!

Making Tails Wag Better

By Deb D’Andrea

There are several companies who encourage their employees to bring their pet to work, and several who comfortably provide for both dogs and cats in the work place. These companies are smart according to research published in spring 2012 by Virginia Commonwealth University. They discovered the stress-causing hormone cortisol was lowered in individuals who brought their pet to work, with the average stress level falling 11%.

Along with lowering one’s stress level, pets can decrease their persons’ blood pressure and cholesterol level, and a recent study by Central Michigan University showed dogs can lead to more trust between co-workers. It has been proven people are more productive when they are happy and not having to worry about getting home to their pet. Often, many people stay late to finish projects because they have their pet with them, and are encouraged by their pet to take well deserved breaks throughout the day.

Not only will you find dogs in the workforce, but also cats. Right here in Nederland, Blue Owl Books has the resident cat, Lucy, who will be more than happy to get the door for you or curl up in your lap as you enjoy a good read. Cats can be found in a variety of places, from pottery shops to nurseries to hospice care and much more. Along with being social, cats can help manage mice, keep children occupied while their parents shop, and often will curl up in the store window causing passer-byers to stop and take note.

There are several ways to approach your company and help organize a good pet policy, and lots of examples of good policies to reference with plenty of research to support implementing a “bring your pet to work” policy. I’ve helped write a couple policies for companies and then pets were allowed! Woohoo!
